Delicious and Colorful Berries

Every year in spring and summer we have the colorful and delicious gift of nature, berries. Due to their nutrient content and antioxidant qualities, fresh berries are an impotent part of any healthy diet. Their colors are due to natural pigments and are usually antioxidants. In fact scientists have found that antioxidant amount in berries are among the highest levels in any fresh fruits. Antioxidants are substances that protect the body by reducing the risk for certain cancers, treating some disorders and slowing down the aging process.
Berries are also a good source of vitamins. For example, a cup of fresh strawberries contains about the same amount of vitamin C as a cup of orange juice with much less calories. Strawberries also contains a bit of calcium, magnesium, folic acid, and potassium. A cup of blueberries contains smaller amount of Vitamin C but has some lutein which is important for healthy vision.
Usually berries are sweet and you can just serve them alone as a healthy snack or dessert. On the other hand, berries are good friends with cream and chocolate. Just add a little bit of whipping cream to a cup of strawberries and dust over with chocolate powder and you will have a mouth watering dessert.
